A few days ago, I spoke with NPR’s Lourdes Garcia-Navarro about the news that Asian immigrants are now the largest group in the country and how the rhetoric of the model minority that we hear so much about today is inaccurate. I worried out loud about how the media attention on both stories (seemingly positive) might mask American anxieties and perhaps lead to a backlash. What aired today on Weekend Edition was part of a larger discussion that — although we did not know it — has proven to be even more timely than we could have known. Lots of conversations going on via Twitter today about Nicholas Kristof’s piece today in the NYT again offering misleading and partial “facts” about “why Asians are so successful.” See #ModelMinority and #ModelMinorityMutiny. I’m contributing there (@prof_erikalee).
