Author and University of Minnesota professor, Erika Lee will discuss her new book The Making of Asian America: A History on Wednesday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave. S.E. Minneapolis.
Lee, the granddaughter of Chinese immigrants, introduces readers to the diverse and long history of Asian Americans. The Making of Asian America chronicles the stories of millions of Asian immigrants who have crossed the Pacific Ocean to start new lives, including Filipino sailors who arrived in the Americas on the first trans-Pacific ships in the 1500s to the Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II. This epic history shows how Asian-Americans have emerged as America’s “model minorities” in ways that reveal the complicated role that race still plays in the United States.
Lee will sign copies of her book following the discussion. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, or to order a signed copy visit the U of M bookstore website here.
